Francisco Vallejo Pons leads in Linares

number of players he has a game extra compared to most of the others. But as
the underdog, the local talent, Francisco has scored five draws against all
the top players – a performance 127 points better than his 2629 rating.
Meanwhile Garry Kasparov has drawn first blood against Adams to join Vallejo

– Wunderkind David Howell from Seaford, East Sussex, is eleven years old. He was taught the moves at the age of five by his father after they had bought a chess set for £1.00 at a jumble sale. Now David is taking on BGN world champion Vladimir Kramnik in one-to-one contest. The event is being staged by Brain Games partner Einstein.

Who is going to win in Cannes?

not far away in Cannes, France, the NAO Chess Masters tournament is taking place

Maurice Ashley, everyday hero

– Guess who has been nominated an "Everyday hero" by Burger King? Maurice
Ashley, the first and only African-American to achieve the title of International
Grandmaster. "Ashley is a hero because he's given back to the community
that has given him so much". As Director of Chess Programs for the Harlem
Educational Activities Fund he has been by helping to develop the self esteem

So much more than simply a bunch of games

– ChessBase Magazine 86 is out – a CD chock-full of goodies. Of course there is a main database with 1802 games and reports, over 500 annotated by experts. It has a multimedia report on the Europe-Asia match in Batumi, produced by the European team captain Alexander von Gleich. That's over 500 MB of video material. And there are training articles and databases, on the opening (this time Bird, Caro Kann and English), middlegame, endgame, strategy, tactics and correspondence chess. Find out more about it here.

Chess - A psychiatrist matches Wits with Fritz

– That is the name of a mysterious book that is being advertised
on the Internet. They say it contains a compilation of over 125 games that
systematically illustrate a strategy that succeeds in beating today’s best
chess computer programs in less than 40 moves. The author is a psychiatrist
who analyzed the thinking process behind chess computer programs. We have no
further details, but have ordered the book. You never know, maybe we can learn
a trick or two.

Shredder tops the ratings lists

– It has won more computer chess world championships than anyone can remember.
Now for the first time Shredder
6 has topped the computer rating lists, which are based on a very large
number of games played under controlled conditions on many computers. Of the top 20 programs 17 (including the top five) are produced or distributed by ChessBase. Check it out in our online
shop. Fritz7 will be tested in the next list.
