Taming the tiger
29.04.2002 – Just when it looked as though Ilya Smirin was lost against In his game against Chess Tiger, the 2702 GM uncorked some tactical fireworks that sent the program - and the Internet audience – reeling. "This is the best game against computers I have ever seen," said one. The hero of the day told us he was very pleased to have "pulled this one off." The Grandmaster and the Creature from a Parallel World
27.04.2002 – Sergei Tiviakov, born in Russia, now living in Holland, is a very strong grandmaster. Recently he played in the 6th Golden Cleopatra tournament in Cairo, which he duly won. During his stay he visited the Great Pyramids and brought back some spectacular pictures – and an astonishing tale of an encounter with a creature from the parallel world. This you have to see to believe.

A matter of honour
26.04.2002 – Imagine the following: White is winning a game, Black is playing some last desperate moves. Suddenly White has technical problems and cannot continue. So he offers Black a draw. Black refuses and insists White get the full point. There is a heated argument: Black wants to resign, White insists on a draw. Finally both sides agree to replay the game from scratch. Unimaginable, such gentleman-like behaviour? Well that's what happened in yesterday's Man vs Machine game.

And here it is: new plans for a reunified chess world
25.04.2002 – The Einstein Group in London and Nahed Ojjeh have announced their support of the reunification of the chess world. To this end they are seeking collaboration with all interested parties in a daring new proposal that is to be discussed at the upcoming Eurotel Trophy in Prag. The funding would be mainly supplied by Madame Ojjeh, a Syrian born billionaire who lives in Paris. You will find the joint press release of both parties here.

What will the morrow bring for chess?
25.04.2002 – Political upheavals in the chess world, with the super-tournament in Astana cancelled, FIDE unable to fund its Grand Prix cycle and breaking with its commercial partners, no clearly recognised world champion. Where to go and what to do? Well, we believe there may be some exciting news pretty soon (like on Thursday at 13:00 GMT) regarding an attempt to repair the dismal situation. Keep abreast with all the latest developments in John Henderson's daily chess column.

Building a fortress against the computer onslaught
25.04.2002 – "Oh the humanity!" moaned one of many hundred visitors on the Playchess server. Super-GM Ilya Smirin, Elo 2702, was being clearly outplayed by Hiarc 8, the latest program in the ChessBase stable. Showing impressive positional understanding Hiarcs had a winning position. But with a brilliant trick (predicted by kibitzer Vishy Anand) Smirin was able to build an impregnable fortress and save the game. You can replay the game with live chat by prominent visitors on our Javascript board, or go to our special coverage page.

Mig is back – and he's funny
23.04.2002 – Because you didn't demand it! Mig Greengard, fresh from the unemployment line, has joined our team at ChessBase. The man who brought you the Chicken Factor and the Leko Poetry Jam will be appearing here exclusively with his column Mig on Chess. We're so happy we've almost forgotten how he talked us into it (there was a case of German beer involved, but our memory is a little fuzzy). Without further ado, check out Mig on Chess #164.
