Feelin' good – an interview with Eurotel winner Vishy Anand
08.05.2002 – On Sunday Anand won the Eurotel World Chess Trophy, arguably the strongest knock-out tournament ever held. After a string of mediocre restults this was an important victory for the Indian superstar and ex-world champion. In an interview conducted shortly after the final game Vishy gave us his impressions of the tournament. You will find it together with the key games here.
 

Two grandmasters and a computer in Corinth
08.05.2002 – From May 13 to 18 the Greek city of Korinthos (Corinth) is paying host to an interesting rapid chess event. First top GM Mikhail Gurevich, Elo 2641 and number 47 in the world, will take on the computer world champion Junior 7 in four 60-minute games. Then Gurevich will play six rapid chess games against the Greek champion Christodoulos Banikas. More
 

Peace in our time
06.05.2002 – The Prague negotiations described in our previous report have born fruit, all parties have presented a plan that sees the winner of the Einstein cycle and the winner of a special FIDE match between Ruslan Ponomariov and Garry Kasparov playing a match in November 2003 for the undisputed Chess World Championship title under the FIDE banner. The Unity Agreement has been signed, you will find the text of the document here.
 

The Five K's meet in Prague
06.05.2002 – Not since The Godfather I has there been such a high-powered family get-together. Today all the big makers and drivers are meeting in Prague to try to clean up the mess that is loosely called "the chess world". Astonishing new friendships have been forged, classical shuttle diplomacy was employed. Read all about it in John Henderson's front-line report. 05.05.2002 – Requiring a win in game two of the final Anatoly Karpov achieved a vaguely promising position, only to see Indian superstar Vishy Anand hold effortlessly. In fact it was Anand who had winning chances when Karpov offered him a draw, effectively resigning the match. 04.05.2002 – It was a magnificent display of chess strategy. Facing a defensive Petroff by Karpov, who made it quickly clear that he was playing for a draw, Vishy Anand methodically pushed his opponent off the board – much to the delight of the many visitors on the Playchess server who spent over five hours following the game. 02.05.2002 – Remember The FIDE world championship finals in Lausanne, 1998? Well, we're going to have a repeat, with Anand and Karpov qualifying for the final of the Eurotel World Chess Trophy. In an exciting round Anand eliminated Ivanchuk and Karpov showed Shirov that wile does not disappear with age. Reports, games and pictures are available on our Eurotel coverage page. Can computers understand abstract chess concepts? Apparently yes!
02.05.2002 – It was a remarkable game, especially when you consider that one side was an inanimate computing machine. A number of times computer chess world champion Junior made unusual strategic decisions that surprised top GM Alexey Dreev. The program seeming to understand abstract chess concepts, which led Dreev to remark after the game (which ended in a draw): "Junior played very well and in a very unusual style, considering that it is a computer program." Ivanchuk eliminates Kasparov in sudden death playoff
02.05.2002 – The tournament favourite Garry Kasparov was eliminated from the Eurotel World Chess Trophy in Prague in the final sudden-death game against Vassily Ivanchuk. In the other matches Karpov defeated Morozevich, Anand eliminated Sokolov and Shirov beat Topalov to go through to the semifinals. 01.05.2002 – Three cheers for 2702 GM Ilya Smirin. With the black pieces this amazing computer killer was soon pressing against Deep Junior and in fact probably missed a clear win on move 39. But after a long match against the strongest chess programs in the world the human being did not have the strength to carry it home. Still, with a final 5-3 score he has become the "hero of humanity", as one visitor on the Playchess server called him.
