Kasparov vs Kramnik klash in Moscow
15.11.2001 – A press conference has revealed more details about the Kasparov vs. Kramnik Botvinnik Memorial in December. There will be three parts: four classical games on Dec. 1 – 5; six rapid chess games (30 min. for all the moves) on Dec 7 + 8; and ten five-minute blitz games on Dec. 9. The winner with the most overall points takes 60% of the prize fund of $500,000 – $250K for the classic games, $200K for the rapid and $50K for the blitz. Kramnik tells you how to beat Fritz
14.10.2001 – BGN world champion Vladimir Kramnik has been preparing for his delayed match against Deep Fritz. Apparently he has found something. In a lecture to the Kasparov Chess "Champions Club" on Monday, October 15 at 8 p.m. Paris/Berlin (7 p.m. London, 2 p.m. NY) the champ will go over his games with Deep Fritz and field questions. Vladimir Kramnik moving with the Times
14.10.2001 He's the BGN world champion and should be in the news a lot. Well, how about a full page colour piece in today's Sunday Times? It's a fairly intimate portrait of the 26-year-old, who says he is basically not interested in money. "I've been a millionaire since my world-championship match with Kasparov last year, but I live like a very ordinary Russian citizen." 5th World Team Championship under way
13.10.2001 – The 5th World Team Championship has started on Oct. 12th in the Opear house in Yerevan, Armenia. In the first round Russia trounced Hungary 3:1 (with Svidler beating Leko) while Germany drew with Ukraine. Things are getting faster and faster
11.10.2001 – At the congress in Halkidiki the FIDE Executive Board has resolved to introduce two new time controls: 1h 15m for 40 moves + 15m for the rest + 30s per move; and 1h 30m + 30s. The circular letter states: "Upon the request of many players the FIDE President has approved the request of the Organising Committee for the 2001/2002 World Chess Championships on the introduction of the variant of the new time control of all the moves in 1 hour 30 minutes with an incremental time of 30 seconds per move from move one."
 

Karpov to to fight for Mother Russia
10.10.2001 – We thought he had signed up to play in the 3K Botvinnik memorial, but now FIDE reports that former world champion Anatoly Karpov intends to try a comeback in the FIDE knockout world championship, which will be held at the same time in Moscow. . “I brought the title back to Russia from the West in 1975," said Karpov. "Now I feel it is my duty to wrest the crown from the East and take it back to Mother Russia.” more
 

The three at the top of the FIDE rating list
06.10.2001 – Even though Vishy Anand's blackout performance in Dortmund lost him 24 points he remains in the three-player group at the top of the latest FIDE rating list. Vladimir Kramnik is now just 29 points behind the permanent leader, Garry Kasparov, who has built himself a nest at a dizzying hight of 2830. Alexander Morozevich and Peter Leko follow the three at a respectful distance, then come Veselin ("welcome back") Topalov, Michael Adams and Vassily Ivanchuk. For the first time in years Alexei Shirov ist not among the top ten. more
