Four draws, two exciting, two ho-hum
09.07.2002 – Round four in the Dortmund Chess Meeting brought us two very exciting games and two somewhat dull draws. The leaders Topalov and Bareev still a full point in the lead. Shredder wins world computer blitz championship
09.07.2002 – He has won more computer tournaments than anyone can count, and now Stefan Meyer-Kahlen has won the computer blitz world championship. His program Shredder looks set to take the regular computer chess world title as well. With three rounds to go it is leading the field ahead of Junior, Brutus and Quest. Nothing matters more than winning

Topalov and Bareev maintain their lead
09.07.2002 – The first stage of the Dortmund Candidates is half over, with Veselin Topalov and Evgeny Bareev each a full point in the lead. Both drew their games today, while Gelfand took the full point in a great game against wildcard Lutz. Results, games and pictures are available on our Dortmund coverage page. Shredder and Brutus lead the field
08.07.2002 – In round four Shredder defeated contender Junior with the black pieces, while Quest and Brutus drew their game. Then in round five the top encounter Shredder vs Quest ended in a draw, while Brutus defeated Warp. So now Shredder and Brutus lead with four points each. Climbing to Kramnik in Dortmund
08.07.2002 – Are you ready to polka? Dortmund is well underway and Mig takes a closer look at the first two rounds. Two mating attacks have Topalov in good shape and Bareev may be wondering if he can take on his former boss for the match title. After that a few cheapos and Kasparov versus the Kiddies in New York. Deep Blue whacked computer chess over the head
08.07.2002 – James Robertson is a young computer chess programmer, competing in the world championship in Maastricht. The nineteen-year-old is there to learn, not to win. At least not outright. "I would be very satisfied with with one of the top five places, top eight is also good," he says in a garden interview with Eric van Reem.
 

Topalov and Bareev virtually through
08.07.2002 – At the Dortumund Candidates Veselin Topalov and Evgeny Bareev (right with his wife) chalked up their seconds wins in two games. We can certainly expect to see the two in the finals. Shredder, Brutus, Junior, Quest lead the field
07.07.2002 – Rounds two and three at the World Computer Chess Championship brought no losses for the top four contenders. Diep, due to its super-computer hardware also a top seed, disappointingly drew and lost its encounters today. Who will win the Shannon Trophy (left)? 06.07.2002 – The Dortumund Candidates started today, with German Interior Minister Otto Schily executing the first moves on the stage.
