Dortmund and the Germans
16.07.2002 – Our chess correspondent John Henderson, Scotsman by birth and choice, has spent two weeks in Dortmund, annotating games and studying the Germans around him. Here are his reports on the semifinal rounds one and two, entitled Wunderbar and The last chance saloon. All Dortmund reports are to be found on our Dortmund index page.

"Today a GM title is worth very little"
15.07.2002 – The U.S. vs China Summit match is currently being held in Shanghai, China (overall the Chinese are currently in the lead). Chris Heringer sat down with GM Yasser Seirawan to talk about chess, the Summit match, politics at the top levels, and more. You will fine excerpts of the conversation here

Peter Leko qualifies for final, Bareev beats Topalov
15.07.2002 – The first finalist in the Dortmund classical chess world championship qualifier is Peter Leko. The 22-year-old Ungarian was able to win another black game against Alexei Shirov to take the semifinal match with one game to go. In the other game Bareev won for a second time in succession to take a 2:1 lead. Topalov must win the last game with white. Results, games and pictures are available on our Dortmund coverage page.

"I have learnt a lot from Kramnik"
14.07.2002 – After his 2002 defeat by Vladimir Kramnik in London, Garry Kasparov has changed his style and redirected his chess preparations. The world's strongest player talks about Deep Blue, FIDE, upcoming players ("Ponomariov, Grischuk and Radjabov") and his chances of regaining his title in a Sunday interview in the German newspaper FAZ. Bareev strikes back in Dortmund
14.07.2002 – After the two amazing black wins in round one of the Dortmund Candidates semifinals today Evgeny Bareev struck back. Playing a Caro-Kann he ground down Bulgarian GM Veselin Topalov in six hours of play. Peter Leko held his lead effortlessly with the white pieces. Results, games and pictures are available on our Dortmund coverage page.

McDonald's and puberty
14.07.2002 – Eight are gone and four remain in Dortmund. Shirov beats Topalov, but was there a conspiracy? Who has the edge in the semifinals? Who gets more free days, a French fryer or a Dortmund player? Confused? We were too until we read Mig on Chess #173.

Dortmund semifinals begin with a bang
14.07.2002 Nobody expected today's results. Peter Leko and Veselin Topalov both won their games, against Shirov and Bareev. But more amazing: they did so with the black pieces! Leko did it with a hot Sicilian, Topalov with pure tactical brilliance. Results, games and pictures are available on our Dortmund coverage page.

Shirov beats Topalov, the rest leave Dortmund
12.07.2002 – In the tiebreak games Alexei Shirov scored 1.5:0.5 against Veselin Topalov. Shirov will thus face Leko, while Veselin Topalov plays Bareev in the semifinals. For the other players it is auf wiedersehen, as John Henderson reports.

Topalov, Shirov, Bareev and Leko qualify
12.07.2002 – After the finish of the regular six rounds of the Dortmund Chess Meeting the four qualifiers for the semi-finals are fixed. Topalov and Shirov have to play a tie-break for first place (to determine the pairings of the next round). Results, games and pictures are available on our Dortmund coverage page.

Junior wins the Computer Chess World Championship
11.07.2002 – After a thrilling playoff Junior and its team Shay Bushinsky and Amir Ban finally took the title in Maastricht. Junior won the first game with an impressive kingside attack. The prestigious Shannon Trophy now moves to Israel. Shredder was second, Brutus won the bronze medal, Quest ended fourth – a clean sweep for the ChessBase programs. You will find extensive reports and pictures (and all the games) on our special coverage page.

Boris Alterman's Kamikaze simul
11.07.2002 – Remember how Boris Gulko, Ilya Smirin and Mikhail Gurevich played matches against the computer? Well those gentlemen took on the machines one-on-one. Not so Boris ("Madman") Alterman, who undertook to play a clock simul against eleven top programs. Well, he lost overall, mainly on time. But he was winning on all the boards. Eric van Reem sent us a report on this incredible experiment.
