White to play and go insane
16.08.2002 – "Call it Fischerandom, Chess960, or just call it crazy, the Mainz organizers seem determined to force this chess variant on us," write Mig Greengard on the opening of the Mainz Chess Classic. He also remarks on the fact that the organizers are promoting the Lolita aspect of the match more than the games. Read all about this (and the trouble Mig got himself into with his remarks on the Kasparov-Deep Junior match) in the latest Mig on Chess #177.

Driving Miss Elli
16.08.2002 – Getting to a chess tournament can sometimes be a hazardous affair. Elisabeth Pähtz, who was scheduled to take a four hour trip from Dresden to Mainz to attend the Mainz Chess Classic got caught in Dresden's catastrophic floods and had to practically swim over to Mainz. Alexandra Kosteniuk drove ten hours to get there and had to immediately embark on a five-hour simul. Read all about it here.

Murder English style
13.08.2002 – Normally, as any chess novice will tell you, the king ia a terribly fragile piece. It has to be secured and protected, you must castle into safety as soon as possible, and protect it against the enemy forces. Unless, of course, you are English. In that case it does not apply. For some unfathomable reason English champions tend to use their kings as vicious attacking pieces. Lev Khariton tells the story in his latest historical chess column.

More man vs machine in the Post
13.08.2002 – The Washington Post can't get enough of chess, with another story on man vs machine appearing on Monday. "Both Deep Fritz and Deep Junior are excellent programs", they write, "and, unlike Deep Blue, they are available commercially through ChessBase, the world's leading chess software company in Germany." We can only blush. The story by GM Lubomir Kavalek is here.

Pictures from Amsterdam
05.08.2002 – The weather outside was frightful, but the chess action at the Lost Boys tournament was delightful. Especially for Loek van Wely, who won it with 8.5/9! Unfortunately the tenth edition of this famous tournament will probably be the last. Reason enough for Anna Dergatscheva to pack up her digital camera and set out on the 250 km journey in her old car. From Amsterdam Anna send us this illustrated report.

Keene speaks out
05.08.2002 – He was instrumental in setting up the current chess situation. Of late he has not been in the limelight so much. Keene gives us his view on the current situation of world chess in this exclusive article.
