– She's seventeen, disconcertingly pretty, and smart as hell. Alexandra Kosteniuk has already made it to the finals of the FIDE world championship in the women's section. And in her first game she bravely overcame her Chinese rival to go into the lead. In the men's section Ivanchuk pressed against Anand, but to no avail. – Can you win with a queen vs a rook? Don't be so sure – even the best players on the planet can run into problems when confronted with this endgame. Especially in rapid chess playoff games, during a world championship, with tens of thousands of dollars at stake. Anand through, Kosteniuk equalises

– The reigning FIDE world champion was in no mood for tedious discussions. Playing the Hoover Variation Anand didn't let Shirov see even the slightest glimmer of light. The game ended in a draw and Anand proceeds to the semi-finals. Alexandra Kosteniuk had to actually win to equalise, which she did in a brave game against the Chinese player Xu Yuhua. Anand beats Shirov in a Petroff

Chess, cats and free-flowing beer

Last weekend over 200 players made the pilgrimage to the latest edition of the tournament, which was held in the magnificent surroundings of Kilkenny Castle. – Round four of the FIDE knockout world championship saw Anand, Ponomariov, Ivanchuk, Lautier, Gelfand and Bareev go through, while Shirov kept it exciting to the very end, beating Topalov in the final "sudden death" tiebreak game. In the women's section Alexandra Kosteniuk (see below) beat Almira Skripchenko to join Chiburdanidze, Zhu Chen and Xu Yuhua to enter the semi-finals. Report to follow. Kasparov knows this line very well after 14 moves he has exactly the position from his game against Korchnoi in the Candidates of 1983.
