Man vs machine – but not Kasparov

– While Garry Kasparov battles it out in New York against Deep Junior, back in
Holland the world's number eight player, Evgeny Bareev, is playing a four-game
match against the English program Hiarcs. The first two games ended in a
draw, the next will bring the decision. You can watch them live on the Playchess.com

Kasparov's 'fingerfehler' lets the computer off the hook

– The world's strongest player Garry Kasparov dominated in the game, and he had
Deep Junior on the ropes. But suddenly a tiny inaccuracy left him with a draw
instead of a win. Shaking his head in sheer disbelief Kasparov watched the computer
sacrifice its queen and force the champion to accept a repetition of moves.

Houston, we have a chess problem...

– How do the crew members aboard space shuttle Columbia and the International
Space Station take a break from scientific research? The chat via radio about
their families and play a game of chess. On Monday Shuttle pilot William McCool
had e-mailed station crew member Donald Pettit a move in their long-distance
chess game. "It's my move. Tell him en garde," Pettit said. More.

A tête-à-tête with Anand

– "Not losing a game is not my goal, but winning the tournament is,'' said
Vishy Anand after his plus-four win
in Wijk aan Zee. He spoke to India's national newspaper The Hindu
about the FIDE world championship cycle and reunification plans, calling the
possible forfeit of Ponomariov "inappropriate''. You will find the interview

Top grandmasters dissatisfied with FIDE tournament policy

– Following the Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee, the six top grandmasters have appealed to FIDE president Kirsan Illyumshinov in an open letter. Points of criticism are the abandonment of the FIDE world cup after two of five scheduled tournaments, as well as the uncertainty about date and form of the once planned world championship.

Mate alert in Maastricht!

– While the eyes of the world are focused on the match Kasparov
vs. Deep Junior, other soulless chess machines, too, are trying to outshine the
human mind: in Maastricht,
Hiarcs X is taking on Evgeny Bareev, the world's number 8 from Moscow. The first
game of four is played today at 13.00 CET, the remaining three on January 29, 30

Deep Junior Deep-Sixed in New York by Kasparov

– Garry Kasparov knocked Deep Junior into the fifth dimension in game one of their
six-game match. The "Official Man-Machine World Championship" is looking
very good for man so far. It was classic anti-human chess by the world number
one. Novelty in the opening, power play in the middlegame, resignation by black.

Boy do they love this match!

– The broadsheets, Internet sites and TV stations are full of it. The New York
Times carried two full articles – on the day after Super Bowl!! "They
love the event," says the organiser, "they love the coverage, they
love Garry, they love the result of game one." X3D

Kasparov wins game one against computer

– Deep Junior is one of the strongest programs in the world, and it was prepared
for this match by human grandmasters. But in game one in New York it ran into
a Super-Grandmaster, or something beyond that. Garry Kasparov took the bull
by the horns in a daring game which left the audience gasping. A full report

Vishy wins Wijk

– After not having played a single game of classical chess for almost a year Indian superstar Vishy Anand came back with a bang at the Corus Wijk aan Zee tournament. Without losing a single game and winning four he took first place with a 2809 performance. Second was Judit Polgar, who also remained undefeated. 'Deep Junior is clearly better than Deep Blue'

– There were enough journalists to cripple any complementary buffet in the world. In under a month, the Kasparov name and the X3D promotion team brought over 150 media representatives to the New York Athletic Club for Kasparov's first public game against a computer in almost six years.
